The classical dance form that has originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh has been given its present form by Siddhendhra Yogi,a saint.Earlier earmarked only for males, this field is slowly being popularized among the fairer sex as well.
Performed to the classical Carnatic sangeetham,This form shares many similarities with Bharatanatyam. While there are Jatiswaram and Tillana in Kuchipudi as well, there are innnumerous compositions in the nritya department.Kuchipudi primarily focuses on abhinaya and theme of the dance drama unlike pure dance movements of Bharatanatyam. The forms differ in their style of expression wherein Kuchipudi, the dancer sings the text while performing abhinaya unlike in bharatanatyam where lip-movement is not permitted. The trademark items of Kuchipudi include the Tarangam where the dancer performs on the raised edges of a brass plate.to be able to perform one, requires high level of professionalism and perfection in Kuchipudi.
